Not too long ago Tobacco companies were using cartoon characters to influence children into thinking smoking was cool. They got in a lot of trouble for that, eventually.

Teaching Children Discipline: Advice from a Taekwondo Teacher

Back in my early days of marriage I can remember observing energetic and unruly kids and wondering, “Why don’t they just discipline that child?” Then we had a child of our own. That answered my question. My daughter’s first complete sentence as a child was, “Ya drive me nuts! Ya drive me nuts!” She learned that from hearing her mother saying it repeatedly when frustrated by her resistance to discipline.

Raising children is easier said than done. In the martial arts school, Taekwondo instructors often act as surrogate parents while children are in class. Unless you’ve been there, it’s next to impossible to understand the process. Because at times, it seems that there is no process. The rewards and discipline that work well for one child may not work at all for the next. And just when we think we have a handle on raising kids”, God often sends us a whirl wind of a strong-willed child. I wonder if He does that to keep us humble.

Here are some effective principles that I would like to share with you. I learned some through authors on the subject. Some I learned from observation in my Taekwondo class. And others I figured out the hard way by learning from my own mistakes. Hopefully these principles that help me teach discipline in my Taekwondo class can help you teach discipline at home.

Respect. Kids need to feel respected in order to develop a healthy self-image. Giving and earning respect is an important part of Taekwondo training. At home this means we need to respect their need for privacy. We need to respect their opinions regardless of how absurd or immature they may seem. When we must discipline, we can show our kids respect by giving ourselves a cooling off period before making any decisions. This action alone will go a long way toward gaining the respect of our kids.

Never, ever discipline in anger. When we discipline in anger, we usually over-react and often over-discipline. This in turn wounds the child’s spirit. They respond later through misbehavior or rebellion. Then we get angry, over-react again, and the cycle continues. When we have a problem child or rebellious teen, we expect them to change, in most of these situations, we also need to change. The structure of Taekwondo class helps develop discipline, but we still need to enforce it at home.

Apologize. If you are experiencing this cycle, it’s not too late to make some improvements. Whenever we have wronged a child we must apologize and seek forgiveness. This is difficult, but it is the first step to improving the relationship. When we apologize to a child, they may be too hurt to forgive at that moment. But give them time, and they’ll show forgiveness through their actions.

Patience & Understanding. We must make a conscious effort to act with patience and understanding. The need to be understood is one of the most fundamental human needs. When children know we are making a sincere effort to understand, it melts their rebellious spirit, and causes them to want to understand us.

The Golden Rule. The bottom line is that everything we need to know to teach children proper discipline was probably taught to us by age 5; be loving, polite, wait your turn to speak, control your anger, show respect to others, be considerate of others feelings, be patient and understanding, and always tell the truth. We’re really talking about the golden rule. “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” That is the kind of self discipline we expect from children who study Taekwondo.

Spend Time. There is a basic concept of time management: spend quality time at work and spend quality time with relationships. There is no substitute for a Taekwondo teacher’s time spent with children. However, no matter how well they are taught, children sometimes choose to live their lives contrary to the way we have taught them. Parents often experience this at home as well.

Please don’t put guilt and blame unfairly upon yourself. As Taekwondo teachers, or as parents, we can only go so far in what we teach children. Some of life’s lessons they must learn on their own. If your student chooses a wayward path, give them time to mature. Meanwhile, they still need your patience, understanding, love, and respect.

Regardless of a child’s personality or temperament, these are some time-proven principles that can help us stay connected with our Taekwondo students. The key is to discipline. Not to punish.

First In Martial Arts For Kids

Martial arts training at peak performance levels is the best way to prevent disease, as well as to stimulate positive changes in the body’s natural healing systems.

Our current lifestyle of Lazy-boy chairs, remote controls and S.U.V.s does not challenge us to move, yet our biological need for physical movement is still the same as when time began. Martial arts training can strongly influence the function of most of the human organ systems and much of the chemistry of our brains and bodies. The changes brought about by martial arts training are dose responsive, but maybe not in the way you believe.

In fact, twice as much is twice as good only up to optimal levels. Beyond that actually tempts an over training response in the body and a decline in physical and mental health. Martial arts training, as well as other exercise forms, dosage combines distance (or time), intensity and frequency — how far, how fast, how often. An additional factor may be technique, which determines the muscle groups and total muscle mass used in the exercise.

For example, kicks work your leg muscles but also increase aerobic capacity. Taking into consideration the type and dosage of martial arts training, it affects the body and its systems in numerous positive ways.

It is a difficult task ahead to teach a child with Attention Deficit Disorder. Many schools have identified the problem and addressed the issue because substantial developments have been made to recognize the problem.

It is a difficult task ahead to teach a child with Attention Deficit Disorder. Many schools have identified the problem and addressed the issue because substantial developments have been made to recognize the problem. But still there are some schools that lag behind in their systematic arrangements and cannot always answer individual needs.

The way ADD influences a classroom has been seen even before any diagnosis is done. It may be observed in the boy boisterously chasing his classmates around to snatch their books, or in the small girl sitting in the corner and playing with her hair, her mind on the outside world. It is usually the teacher who first recognizes that her student is having problems paying attention to the class or more active than what is acceptable. But identifying the problem is just merely the first step, and the most difficult part is changing the inattentive or hyperactive attitude.

The treatment of the disorder starts when everyone acknowledges it and a diagnosis is has been carried out. It is important to decide whether medicine is required, since that would determine the course of the treatment. There are a number of schools, which quite inhumanly emphasize that the child suffering from ADD be given medicines. Some schools, though, take a patient stance and comply with the wishes of the child’s parents’.

Whether your child is better able to cope with the situation will be determined by the kind of school he is in. In an ideal situation, your child should attend a school that understands the effectiveness of working together as a team by taking stock of your circumstances and respecting your decisions, to lead your child to the achieve the best that he or she could do.

Regrettably some schools lack this open-minded vision. Communities that are small and places that are poor compared to other districts have this habit of being too much conservative and are not open to cater to children who have special needs or specific situations. If your child is admitted to a school of the first kind, then you can relax happily, but if it is of the latter type, then be warned that you will have quite a handful of issues to reckon with!

ADD makes children hard to instruct, they are generally chaotic and very difficult to control. For these reasons many school refuse to accommodate such unruly children. Nonetheless, you make sure that your child is not given secondary treatment under any circumstances.

The FDA today announced its approval of the use of Prilosec in children as young as 1 year old.The FDA yesterday approved Prilosec delayed-release oral suspension (liquid) for the short-term treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and the healing of erosive esophagitis (erosions in the lining of the esophagus) in children aged 1-2.

Prilosec, made by AstraZeneca, was previously approved for use in children aged 2 to 16.Last month, the FDA approved another GERD drug, Nexium, for use in children aged 1-11. Nexium, which is also made by AstraZeneca, was already approved for use in kids aged 12-17.Neither pill is approved for use in children younger than 1 year old.

© 2008 WebMD, LLC. All rights reserved.

What’s NEXT?

The reason for GERD, heartburn, acid reflux, or whatever they want to call it is occuring because people (children, babies included) are eating overly processed food.

Food which has been processed at a temperature greater than 108 ° F will contain NO enzymes.

Natural, raw food has enzymes that enable digestion to occur in the way that nature intended. By cooking, processing raw food until it is “dead” will create digestive and other health problems.

Due to the fact that almost ALL food available today HAS been heated, tortured, processed and had the life wrung out if it necessitates supplementing diets with enzymes.

There are a TON of enzyme products available, but after carefully analyzing just about every one of them they don’t compare in any way with PBF Super. We are so certain that this product is the best, that we give away a 3 day supply sample to people who are suffering from GERD, Acid Reflux, and chronic heartburn. Every person who has taken this Enzyme Complex has been absolutely amazed with the effectiveness….

With all that is written about ADHD, most of us tend to think of a bad little boy running around totally destroying whatever happens in his path. So we often believe that we can spot the child with ADD. Well, the naughty little boy is there fine, but did we ever spare a thought about the little girl who sits quiet and withdrawn with her mother, one who is overtly polite, terribly afraid to speak out and draws a blank when spoken to? In all probabilities, everyone would fail to guess that she might be suffering from ADD or Attention Deficit Disorder.

Difficult as they are, ADD and ADHD have some obvious symptoms too. The affected person suffers from distraction, easy forgetfulness and low self-esteem, faces problem in following fast conversations and gets highly disordered with tasks. ADD and ADHD both can retard mental growth in this that the affected child has to struggle with school work and assignment deadlines, failing to finish things on time. These disorders also rob the child off his/her ability to manage the belongings and to keep track of time.

ADD Symptoms:

Lacks vigor, suffers from laziness

Values others more, respecting their individual limits

Often unassertive or under-assertive

Too much obedience

Excessive humbleness and modesty

Overtly polite and shy

Avoiding crowd, preferring to stay alone and socially withdrawn

Not able to open up easily and befriend, although they make a few bonds

Since it is assumed that girls are generally shy, people often overlook the ADD symptoms in them and they are left untreated. Their outward calm, quiet and politeness are usually to cover up the inner disturbance. ADD affected girls are emotional and highly sensitive to criticism; but the feelings invoked thus, after being criticized, remain untold. They just carry on with life, struggling silently. Interestingly enough, their ADHD counterparts move forward with absolutely no sign of stress or fatigue and seem totally unaffected by all deterrents in the walk of life. Girls suffering from ADD cannot withstand stress and usually draw back more into a shell with a belief that they are good-for-nothing and can never do anything right.

Helping a person with ADD

All ADD affected girls are predominantly emotional, irrespective of their nature—be it shy, social, introvert, hyperactive or super-impulsive. This over-sensitivity evidently invites regular upsets which, in turn, give rise to more and more stress. Hence, they should be taught to manage stress through various techniques from an early age. They must also be ascribed a certain revival time to regroup or collect themselves after every damage or emotional upset.

Although it is true that parents always wish the best for their children, they sometimes, unknowingly, impede mental growth in their kids by hurling too much criticism at them or by driving them mad with a series of never-ending do’s and don’ts like “You must not be so silly. You have got to finish school with high grades”, “You need to improve your looks. Try and be as smart as your brother”, “You should be a little more assertive. This won’t help”, “why do you let yourself be taken for granted? Wake up”, “Make more friends”, “Do not let go of things so easily” so on and so forth. While all these are fine at times, too much of criticism breeds low self-esteem in her—be she shy, outspoken, drawn-back or unruly!

At school, throughout the day, the confidence and self-regard of these girls are constantly shattered and their only respite is at home, where they can rebuild their crushed dignity and revitalize themselves to fight another day. Continuous criticism roots in them the belief that they are worthless. These girls suffering from ADD become extremely impulsive, disorganized and lack focus in everything only to secure poor grades in class. Full of distractions, these girls lack the vigor and energy to develop their personality and skill sets that their peers have. Instead of pointing at their limitations, it is better to compliment them or appreciate when they pick up a skill or show signs of a good ability. Their psyche just needs a positive boost. And it’s not hard to make them feel good—an ADD-affected girl can easily get lucky and find interest in some activity. That then becomes the first positive move, the most desired turning point in their lives!

One of the most wrongly diagnosed and wrongly understood neurological conditions is Attention Deficit Disorder or more commonly known with its acronym of ADD.The reality is that most people lack a proper understanding of the disorder, and also would not be able to identify this disorder if they met a person with ADD. This article, and there are more to follow, intends to give you:

information about ADD

the meaning of the disorder

the methods by which it is diagnosed

the various treatments

some topics regarding the issue

Let’s hope that this would be a valuable tool by which your knowledge and ability to understand the disorder will increase.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or shortly ADHD/ADD, is a problem where the individual who is affected by it fails to be attentive for a long period of time. Motor restlessness and impulsive behavior are other indications of the disorder. Reports suggest that approximately 4.4% of all adults possess some degree of ADD.

ADD is understood as a disorder of the neurobiological type caused in the brain by a glitch in the dopamine neurotransmitter systems. Genes play a huge part in most cases. There is 30% chance for a child to have ADD if a parent or close relative has the disorder. In cases of twin children: If one of the twins has ADD, the other’s chances of being struck by the disease increases by 50%.

At one time the belief was held that ADD could be caused by poor nutrition, but it has been dismissed now as a myth. Similarly, allergies, drugs or bad parenting could be cut off from the list. Deep head trauma, fetal alcohol syndrome, intoxication through lead, and thyroid irregularities, are some of the other medical conditions showing symptoms like ADD. Hence it is advised that the other possibilities are rules out completely before the person could be said to have ADD for sure.

Having ADD means that an individual having it is not getting sufficient neuro-chemicals. Iin simpler terms it signifies that proper stimulation of the brain is missing. As a result, the brain attempts to find methods by which the release of the chemicals can be increased. People with ADD try to stimulate their brains with things like physical activities, movements, and always doing things that stimulate or are stimulating. This is not a conscious decision by people with ADD. They really cannot help themselves and it becomes a reflex action and they act in a hyperactive manner.

The difficulty caused by this is that those who suffer from ADD, when faced with a circumstance that does not stimulate them, like school work, try to focus their attention on something that is stimulating to them. Of course school work is completely hampered by this, and the child cannot perform well in his or her studies.

I can relate to you a story told to me by a friend. This incident happened when knowledge about the disease was poor. There was a child who would suddenly get up on his desk when the class was still in session, and would begin to tell jokes. In the beginning people thought that he was trying to be funny and consciously disturb the others. But, over time it came to be known that the child had ADD, and his actions were beyond his control.

Personal relationships and the ability to be permanently employed also become causes of concern for people with ADD. Then, legal issues crop up when ADD causes people to take dangerous chances with themselves and end up doing careless things to stimulate themselves.

Let’s face it. Cancer is a highly emotionally charged subject.

The Pharmaceutical Drug companies are real EXPERTS in understanding how to manipulate peoples’ emotions to their advantage. They have at their disposal some of the most effective marketers on the planet who know full well how to maximize fear about deadly Cancer to their PROFIT. Isn’t that just too sad?

The latest “promotion” by the marketing gurus employed by Pharmaceutical Drug companies, is to recommend a vaccine for boys that’s designed to prevent HPV, which may in approximately 1% of cases result in actual Cervical Cancer in women. The twisted premise for this thinking is that if boys engage in oral sex with a female who is positive with the Virus that can cause Cervical Cancer, then they are at risk of ontracting Throat Cancer. NOT that the fact that they may become infected with HPV or Human Papilloma Virus. It’s obvious and reprehensible that this abominable attempt to sell more of their ineffective and potentially dangerous Gardasil Vaccine is nothing more than a “Marketing Event” which is totally designed to create even MORE obscene PROFITS.

If the Pharmaceutical Drug giant Merck manages to convince a seemingly gullible populace that being vaccinated with Gardasil is in fact something that is NECESSARY, they will have effectively doubled Merck’s Gardasil target market, which is young people, with a corresponding doubling of PROFITS.

If you have not studied the studies done on the Side Effects of Gardasil carefully, and are responsible for making the decision for yourself or for your children, then I would beg you to spend some serious time CAREFULLY analyzing both sides of the argument. A wrong decision could have devastating consequences for you and your children.

Once you have carefully studied the evidence you will then understand that boys who receive the proposed Gardasil vaccine will begin to experience side effects, just as their female peers are currently experiencing.

In reality, there is NO need for young girls to be subjected to Gardasil Vaccine, either. A healthy nutritional diet, and healthy exercise keep the immune system functioning the way it’s designed to function. It’s only when our children are allowed to consume “Plastic Food”, refined sugar and white flour products, deep-fried foods, Soda, and NO fresh fruits and vegetables are they at risk for Cancer, Disease, and Chronic Illness.

Fear-Mongering Drives Up Profits

So effective are the marketing campaigns of these Pharmaceutical Drug Companies, that the greater majority of the public will swallow this new campaign “hook – line – sinker” – on how to “protect” their children by having them “immunized” with the Gardasil vaccine. Hopefully after reading this article, you will know better.

It’s the same old story. Fear is typically the driving force used to sell vaccines and other medications, such as the ones listed below.

West Nile Virus vaccine

Antibiotics to fight anthrax

Chicken pox vaccine

A drug for breast cancer (for women who DO NOT HAVE breast cancer)

A human vaccine for bird flu

It All Comes Down to the Fact that – Cancer is Not Caused by a “Vaccine Deficiency”

What is the real cause of cancer, or any “Disease”, for that matter? You have to realize that in no way, shape, or form does it have anything to do with a “Vaccine Or Drug Deficiency”. Cancer and Disease are NOT caused by some random event that is just lurking around the corner, waiting to pounce on you and rob you of your health and well-being.

In the majority of cases, Cancer, Disease and Chronic Illnesses are the result of a breakdown in your system due to an UNHEALTHY LIFESTYLE AND EXPOSURE TO TOXINS IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT. I am totally and unequivocably convinced that unresolved emotional distress, unhealthy nutritional choices and lifestyle are the primary causes of most Cancers, Diseases, and Chronic Illnesses.

Back to the topic of Gardasil. Please, each and every one of you, do your homework and research the documentation about Gardasil before deciding whether or not it is necessary to vaccinate your son or daughter. When you have done the research and if you decide this or any another vaccination or “immunization shot” is NOT for you or your children, you, as their Legal Representative do have the Legal Right to refuse to have it administered.

Dear Parents,

As a father my goal in providing this information is to help every parent ensure the safety of their children. Every home and school should teach children about safety and protection measures. As parents, you should take an active interest in your children and listen to them. Teach your children that they can be assertive in order to protect themselves against abduction and exploitation. And most importantly, make your home a place of trust and support that fulfills your child’s needs. Together we can protect our Nation’s children by teaching them to be smart, strong, and safe.

As my gift to you I am including a FREE month of martial arts classes for your children and every member of your family. I hope that you will accept this gift and learn to live a longer, stronger, safer life. Martial arts are safe, fun and easy to learn and is a great family activity that can help bond parent-child relationships.

How Marital Arts Has Helped Me Through My Life

By Dominique Zaino

At age thirteen years old, I have accomplished many things in my life time with the Martial Arts. I am currently a first degree black belt in the style of Japanese/Okinawan GoJo- Ryu and Kubudo. I have been studying the Marital Arts since the age of three, along with my brothers Tony and Joey Zaino. Not only do the Martial Arts give me self discipline and respect but it also teaches me manners and patience. All these things are good values to have in life. Martial Art training has kept me in shape as well and has helped me with every other sport I participate in.

Besides staying busy with the Martial Arts I am the head captain of the cheer leading squad for Jupiter Middle School of Technology, I do gymnastics at Keeping Flippin Gymnastics studio, I am head anchor and assistant director of my Jupiter Middle Schools news crew, and I am trying out this year for Jupiter Middle Schools county track team.

Martial Art training has helped me with everything I do in life. When it comes to school the Marital Arts gives me confidence to study hard and do my work efficiently and to get good grades. It gives me great manners around others and respect around elders.

My whole family studies the martial arts as well. What I like most about the marital arts is it brings my family together. Unlike team sports or other youth activities Martial Art training is something that we can all do together giving us fun family time. We all work as one team and always get to spend time together. When we travel to an event or a performance show my family and I have a great time and make the trip fun and almost like a mini vacation. The Marital Arts has made me strong and as I practice more and more I get stronger and the better I become.

The Martial Arts always keep me focused and ready when things come unexpectedly. My dad, Danny Zaino, who has been studying the martial arts for over 30 years, is the co founder of the national martial arts karate team “Team Pepsi” which has been running for 7 years. Team Pepsi is what I love most in the martial arts because we are a professional karate team that always puts on entertaining and exciting shows. When we perform we always leave the audience with smiles and a great show. My dad always encourages my brothers and me in the martial arts and that’s why I think I have the skills and technique I have today.

My mom Theresa Zaino runs the Team Pepsi equipment and makes sure our shows run smoothly and the team has everything set and ready to go and do an awesome show. She is the karate mom and helps me in the marital arts by giving me confidence and is always keeping her head up high and her hopes up for the team. More than that, my mom is a role model to me and the other girls on the team.

I like being a part of Team Pepsi because we get to do it all, from performance shows, kick boxing, and competing and that is what makes me an all around great martial artist. What I also love to do in the martial arts is competing. I love the dragline feeling when I’m competing and when you win, it makes you feel like your training as really paid off and it is exciting to reach a new goal.

As you can see the martial arts has really helped me through out my life and keeps me on the right track. As my dad always says it keeps you busy and away from drugs and alcohol and keeps your mind focused to get good grades in school. No matter what happens, I will always stick to the martial arts because it makes me an all around better person and you never know what it might do for me in the future.
